Dr H H Holmes was a cunning and manipulative serial killer whose gruesome “murder castle” saw many deaths during the 1893 World’s Fair and whose tale inspired the book “Devil in White City”… more here >>

A young woman in a white party dress hitchhikes her way back  to Resurrection Cemetery where she was buried after a horrible hit and run accident … more here >>

4. The Eastland Tragedy
844 Western Electric employees perished just a few feet from shore when the pleasure steamer capsized and trapped them. Ghostly cries are often heard near the site where their bodies were taken…  more here >>

5. The Lady In Red
(No, nothing to do with Chris De Burgh) During the grand opening of the Drake Hotel, this unlucky guest spotted her boyfriend making out with another woman and distraught, threw herself off the roof. She is seen wandering the halls in her red silk dress, heading for the stairs… more here >>

6. The Iroquois Theatre Fire
The deadliest single-building fire in United States history, at least 605 people died, many of them women and children enjoying a seasonal matinee performance. The theatre (since torn down) was located in the Loop near what is now The Oriental and they say that on a cold windy night, the alleyways still echo with the screams… more here >>

7. The Rosehill Mother and Child Haunted Statue
Inside Chicago’s largest cemetery  is a life-sized marble monument of a reclining young mother and child. This is Frances Pearce and her infant daughter, both of whom died suddenly in 1854. The statue is encased in glass to protect it from the elements and on some nights the box fills with an eerie haze… more here >>

8. Dead Businessmen
Chicago has it’s fair share of business and entrepreneurial legends many of whom are buried in the Rosehill Cemeraryy including Richard Warren Sears who has been spotted wandering the halls of the mausoleum dressed in his top hat and tails, knocking on the doors to his rivals tombes… more here >>

9. Valentines Day Massacre
Perhaps the most violent and infamous piece of gang violence during Al Capone’s rule of Chicago. Six mob rivals were gunned down inside a garage in Lincoln Park on Feb 14 1929. The garage is long gone but if you pass by the site you still might hear sobbing and moaning or the sounds of gun fire… more here >>

10. The John Hancock Building
Plenty of scary unexplained mysteries, murders and accidents have occurred since the building was finished in 1968, could it be because the building was built on the site of a Satanist cult? Who knows… more here >>

11. The Vanishing Inez Clarke
This six year old girl was killed by a lightening strike during a family picnic and her devastated parents built a life size memorial in Graceland Cemetery. Like many statues, it was encased in glass case to protect it from the elements. During thunderstorms, the little girl disappears… more here >>

12. The Eternal Silence – Statue of Death
This ominous looking statue graces the grave of an early Chicago settler, Dexter Graves, in Graceland Cemetary. It is said that if you stare into the “face” beneath the hood, you will see a vision of your own death… more here >>

13. The Ghost in the Red Lion Ladies Loo
This popular haunt of British Expats is Chicago has it’s fair share of spooky sightings, although perhaps they could be explained by the fabulous booze! Patrons at the Red Lion have reported a”strong presence” in the ladies loo (ooh er!) as well as seeing a man in a cowboy outfit wandering the stairs… more here >>
